For over 35 years, A & B has been designing safes…
Frank Bernath, founder of A&B Safe Corporation, started in the safe business as a serviceman for a Chicago based manufacturing company. Several months after he and his wife, Nell Atkins, married they invested all their savings into starting the safe company, “A” (Atkins) & “B” (Bernath) Truck Safe Company.
Frank began building safes in September of 1964 on the fourth floor of 1919 N. Clybourn Avenue in Chicago, Illinois. The first equipment was an old wooden lathe that Frank modified to cut steel. That lathe along with a welder was how A&B Safe Co. was born!
The first safes Frank designed and built were the AB-1 and the AB-2. The AB-1 was a mid-sized B-rate safe with a rotary hopper on the top to accept large deposits such as bank bags. The AB-2 was a shoebox-sized safe that had a slot in the top to accept envelope-sized deposits. A&B's first products were so successful that Frank and Nell had to move from the fourth floor to the first and second floors of the building on Clybourn Ave.
The success of A&B allowed Frank time to do what he really enjoyed doing the most, studying safes and inventing ways to improve them, garnishing A&B two patents. Over the years there were many changes and these improvements are used by many other safe manufacturers to this day.
In the fall of 1996 Frank and Nell sold A&B Safe Corp. to their longtime friends, Ed and Mildred Dornisch and the company relocated to Glassboro, New Jersey.
… and the Dornisch's are committed to the A&B tradition of providing quality products through continual development and superior workmanship.
